Merkel wins award in Finland, chooses group in Niger as prize money recipient
Finland awards the International Gender Equality Prize, the first high-profile prize of its kind in the world, to someone who has advanced equality among genders. Rather than collecting the prize money, that person selects a cause to receive a major contribution.
Finland announces first recipient of International Gender Equality Prize
Finland is awarding the inaugural International Gender Equality Prize to “a distinguished defender and builder of equality.” It’s the first high-profile prize of its kind in the world.
Real bridge-builder became Finland’s first female government minister
Miina Sillanpää rose from poverty to become one of the first women in the Finnish Parliament and an influential social advocate who helped the cause of women, the elderly and the disadvantaged. Finnish flags fly on October 1 in memory of her contributions.
Scandinavia House in New York formed the starting point for a show of four Finnish painters, all of them women, whose careers coincided with cultural and political transformations. The paintings later continued to Stockholm, and subsequently returned to Helsinki as part of a larger exhibition.
During her wide-ranging and consequential career, Minna Canth advocated for women’s rights and social causes. Her legacy continues; Minna Canth Day is celebrated annually on her birthday, March 19.
