Steep rock-strewn lakeside cliffs topped by pine forests are typical of Kolovesi. Spruce also grows in the moister dells between the cliffs, and linden in the richer soil under the cliffs.
Approached from the west by air, the Kolovesi area looks like a vast stretch of pine forest. It is only when one is almost on top of the park that the narrow waterways between steep cliffs appear, running northwest to southeast. The aerial view makes the park seem flat, but travelling by boat one realizes that the scenery here is among the most dramatic in the entire Saimaa region.
