Lake Haukivesi is about 80 km long, extending from the town of Varkaus southwards to the town centre of Savonlinna. Most of the major islands in the lake belong to Linnansaari national park. There are 130 islands larger than one hectare, and hundreds of smaller rocky islands and skerries. The shores are rocky and craggy, forming an impressive pelagian landscape.
The flora in the area features strong contrasts. In places, the bare, rocky, shores are a front for lush mixed forest in dells and gullies, almost grovelike in places.
