Senate Square and the buildings around it form the magnificent heart of Helsinki. Designed in the neoclassical style mostly by the architect C.L. Engel, the square and its surroundings date mainly from the 19th century. The principal edifices are the main building of the University of Helsinki, the Lutheran Cathedral (formerly the Church of St Nicholas), the Government Palace, and six merchants' houses. A ten-metres-tall pedestal and statue of Czar Alexander II dominate the middle of the square.
