Koli National Landscape
Koli is the name of the highest wooded upland area in the region of North Karelia. Koli borders the shores of Lake Pielinen. Its highest point, known as Ukko-Koli, is approximately 350 metres above sea level. The three high points named Ukko-Koli, Akka-Koli and Paha-Koli form part of the Koli National Landscape, as do the countryside around Lake Pielinen and the Koli National Park. Many distinguished artists have found inspiration and elation in the landscape of Koli amid the spirit of karelianism. Notable among them were the composer Jean Sibelius, the writer Juhani Aho, and painters Akseli Gallen-Kallela, Pekka Halonen and Eero Järnefelt.
The Koli upland is formed chiefly of quartz, one of the most important constituents of the earth's crust. Koli National Park is a first-rate area for outdoor pursuits; ideal for hiking, canoeing, fishing and skiing. The park's geology, vegetation and wildlife are rich and diverse. |
