The Turku Archipelago, off SW Finland, is one of the world's biggest in terms of the number of its islands, some 40,000. Typical of the seascape here is the juxtaposition of low-lying, bleak skerries and groups of forested islands. The archipelago and its waters are a national park, since 1994 designated as a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, whose purpose is to protect local occupations and the exceptional character of the area.
