Turku Castle is one of the best examples of massive medieval architecture in Finland. Situated at the mouth of the River Aura, it was built in the period 1280 to 1310 to be an administrative fortress of the Swedish crown. Over the years several alterations have been made to the castle. In the 16th century it was used as a prison; at the end of the 19th century it became a museum and today it is a venue for banquets and other formal engagements. Its present exterior is the result of repairs carried out in the 1980s.
